Aston University

Over 2,200m² of released capacity and facility enhancement

Scope

  • A brief to achieve space savings equivalent to at least one floor of the North Wing of The Main Building
  • North Wing houses a substantial amount of engineering research and sunk costs limited the scope for alternative uses on several floors
  •
    Actions

  • Completed an assessment of space utilisation, capacity/density and functional suitability which drew on engineering input from Stewarts and cost management advice from Saint Projects
  • Applying rigorous space standards and considering interior space layout and design issues, target areas were identified for harvesting and consolidation of functions
  • In conjunction with the subject group Convenor, assessed the impact on the subject group of releasing these spaces
  • Through objectivity and negotiation, reached agreement on a series of measures to release space and improve the quality of spaces available to the subject group
  •
    Outcome

  • CPB, working in partnership with the Subject Group Convenor, identified workable savings amounting to more than 2 floors (approximately 1200 m²)
  • The Subject Group is set to also benefit from remodelling of facilities amounting to a further 1000 m²
  • In all, these measures represent a significant amount of released capacity to assist the University in its drive to become more spatially efficient
